Our Rafting Center Drina-Tara (camping with bungalows, a restaurant and other facilities) is located between two national parks, Sutjeska and Durmitor. Just a few hundred meters away from us, across the river is the border of the Sutjeska National Park.
We are located on the edge of the Tara canyon and at the end point of all rafting tours. Whichever rafting tour you choose in the canyon of Tara, the completion of the descent will be in our Rafting Center
Sutjeska National Park
Sutjeska Natonal Park has so many different things to offer, so many outdoor activities that it is a true gem and invaluable natural treasure!
The only medieval forest in Europe, Perucica is located in the Sutjeska NP. The Perucica stream goes through the middle of the forest. It is a small river which, in one part, forms the Skakavac (Grasshopper) waterfall, about 100 meters high. In Perućica, as well as in the entire territory of the”Sutjeska” NP there is a large number of endemic plant and animal species. In this area of north Herzegovina and the watershed between the Adriatic and the Black Sea basin the climates mix and contribute to even greater diversity of wildlife. In Perućica you can find trees of hundreds of years, some reaching a height of up to 70 meters.
In the area of the Sutjeska NP, there is a Maglic mauntain, the highest in BiH, at 2386m. When the weather is nice you can see all the way to the Adriatic sea form it. The top of the mountain is very attractive for climbing and hiking and, along with Trnovacko glacier lake, is the most popular hiking destination for our guests.
Besides the 4x4 tours in Perucica and hiking to Trnovacko lake and Maglic, our guests often choose 4x4 safari tours to Zelengora mountain, which is also a part of the Sutjeska NP. Zelngora is a beautiful green mountain, maybe one of the most beautiful ones of the Dinara mountain system. It is of special significance because there are 9 karst lakes. From the season 2017 we will offer ATV tours in the area of the Tara canyon, Sutjeska NP and Zelengora mountain which is ideal for such tours.
Another interesting place to visit is Tjentiste, especially due to its rich history from WW2 as well as much older historical events related to the emergence of the first Serbian states in this area. Before the civil war in Yugoslavia in the 1990s Tjentiste represented one of the main tourist destinations. There is an open swimming pool which was the largest open swimming pool in Europe at the time it was built. It is still one of the bigger ones with its 16.000 square meters. The Sutjeska river is a haven for lovers of fishing on fast mountain rivers. The Sutjeska canyon is the trademark of the Sutjeska NP, along with Vratar where the old Dubrovnik road (Via Ragusa) used to pass.
The canyon of the Hrcavka river is also in the area of the Sutjeska NP. It is narrow and hard to reach but the many waterfalls, pools and natural attractions make it a fantasstic destination for canyoning. The guides of our Rafting Center Drina-Tara have personally marked two parts of the canyon where we have been offering the most attractive canyoning in Balkans for years. Canyoning tours are becoming increasingly popular and last at least one whole day for one part of the canyon.
The Sutjeska National Park is less known than the Durmitor National Park, especially if we look at the bigger picture, globally. However, those who visited this area know that the Sutjeska NP doesn't deserve that rating but it helps it keep all the things real nature lovers come here for.
Durmitor National Park
The Durmitor National Park is very well known and usually crowded with tourists because of the abundant media coverage. Lately, it has perhaps started to lose some of its charm due to many asphalt roads making it available to everybody who want to come there, even by car. The Durmitor National Park is famous for the Tara canyon which is on the UNESCO list as hydrological, geological and biological phenomenon.
An interesting fact is that Nat Geo Traveller published a list of the best world destinations for 2017 within its „Travellers 21 Best of the World“ programme. One of these destinations is „Via Dinarica“ in west Balkans with a leading feature of Sutjeska NP with Maglic, Perucica, Zelengora, the Tara canyon and its rich history.
